Designation of the Mediterranean Sea as Emission Control Area (ECA) - Effective May 1st, 2025

Dear Valued Customers,

We wish to inform you about a new regulation by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which has designated the Mediterranean Sea as an Emission Control Area (ECA), which will be coming into effect on May 1st, 2025. The designation means that as of May 1, 2025, all vessels operating at the Mediterranean Sea will be required to use marine fuel with a Sulphur content of 0.1% (MDO), instead of the current level of 0.5% (VLSFO).

At ZIM, we are committed to ensuring compliance with all regulations, while continuing to offer reliable and efficient shipping services.

Compliance with this new regulation is expected to result in increased bunker costs for ZIM, as well as an increase in related charges to our customers. An additional advisory with the updated charges will be provided by April 2025.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to address the global challenge of climate change and compliance with all laws and regulations.

If you have any questions, please contact our customer service or your account manager.

Thank you for choosing ZIM for your shipping needs.

Sincerely,

ZIM Integrated Shipping
