Wet hides in a DV Container
Wet Hides (usually covered with remains of hair, wool, fat and blood) are accepted on ZIM Vessels, provided the Customer agrees to properly prepare the Cargo and containers according to the following instructions, and to send in advance for each shipment stuffing photos and the container's number.
The Customer's shipments will be randomly checked in order to verify compliance with the below instructions. Non-compliance with the instructions may result in rejection of future shipments.
Any leaking container will be discharged at the next possible port, and the Customer may have to arrange for re-stuffing and re-preparation of the container, as well as bear all handling costs including cleaning, surveys and re-stuffing costs involved.
All of the following instructions also apply in case of other similar Cargo such as entrails, guts, etc. which are stuffed in plastic drums and shipped in a DV container.
Before a Customer's first shipment of this type of Cargo, the Customer should provide details of the Cargo, container preparation and stuffing method including photos/videos.
1. Preparation of the container prior to stuffing:
1.1. The container's floor should be covered with cardboard.
1.2. Above the cardboard the container has to be lined with a protective plastic liner of minimum 8mils (equivalent to 200 microns).
1.3. A liner must cover at least three quarters of the container height and be secured to the top rails on all sides.
1.4. The inside bottom of the liner should be covered with another layer of cardboard.
1.5. An absorbent material such as sawdust is to be placed on the inside bottom of the liner.
1.6. In case of using a forklift to stuff the Cargo into the container, the Liner must be protected by the above cardboard or by the use of plywood.
1.7. The Cargo should be packed on pallets and wrapped with a plastic sheet.
2. Returning of EMPTY container:
On completion of un-stuffing, the container is thoroughly cleaned and deodorized before returning it to ZIM.
