  3. India’s Flourishing Exports

When it comes to refrigerated exports coming from India, the United States still remains one of the country’s biggest markets. As time passed and demands increased, life-saving pharmaceutical medicines and drugs, produced throughout the South and West Indian coast have succeeded to remain the top exported products out of the country. With over 75 thousand annual TEUs shipped year-round, this commodity sector certainly made its mark, and India has stayed true to its status as the “pharmacy of the world”.

Being a transit-sensitive commodity, pharmaceuticals need a lot of protection and a fitting service to ensure they arrive safely at their final destination. With the ZIM New Frontier (ZNF), high-value cargo such as pharmaceuticals are certainly in safe hands. This premium 23-day service into New York City from Colombo is the fastest service around and has just recently come back with a connecting loop for South Indian coverage once again.

In addition to pharmaceuticals, the eastern region of India is known for its vast source of seafood cargo.

Previously, seafood products were shipped seasonally as catch rates declined due to rough weather. Nowadays, thanks to fresh initiatives in expanding shrimp farming facilities throughout the region, and the widespread success of the local seafood industry, shipping seafood products doesn’t need to rely on seasonality any longer. Like pharmaceuticals, they are packed and shipped throughout the year and put on the market immediately.

Did you know?

Driven by a growing global appetite for shrimp, India has recently become the second-largest producer of shrimp in the world, and the top exporter of farmed-shrimp to the United States. Now that demand has risen even further, market potential is expected to increase by an additional 15% in the upcoming year!

Other food products such as lentils, packed goods, snacks, confectionary items, and popular local delicacies make up the third most-exported goods out of India, to meet the growing demand of the Indian community in the United States.

Looking at our current portfolio of services from Southern India, ZIM’s services are always available to provide customers with tailor-made solutions. Vivek Sharma – ZIM India Commercial Vice President adds, “We treat pharma, seafood, or any other food item as premium products that deserves extra care and attention. For this reason, we operate a dedicated team who is always on-site at the terminals and are responsible for monitoring the containers’ every move. Looking forward, future possibilities to expand ZIM’s presence in the West are always on the horizon.”
